Have you ever heard the cliché “No pain, no gain?” Though it’s very simple, this little phrase is profound, and its truth reaches into nearly every realm of life.

In recent years, we have taken college tours to expose our church youth to the world of academia. On one occasion, our group of potential scholars was led by a hopeful guide through his institution’s sports complex. I was intrigued by the door marked “Weight Room.” Occasionally, during our short visit, I would peek at the activity inside. There were usually a couple of young men engaged in an activity they referred to as “pumping iron.” I watched as they inflicted great pain upon themselves, which was induced by great strain over the weight laden bars. Something inside made me want to rush to their aid shouting “Hold on there, I’ll help you with that.” No, I didn’t actually do it, but I did have the thought. I knew that these men were here by choice and that they endured the pain for hope of the gain which they had obviously come to realize.

Similarly, the Word of God reveals that spiritual fitness, especially our faith, will realize no gain, apart from pain. James said, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (James 1:2-4).”

Dear Christian, God wants us to believe Him more today than yesterday... to grow in faith. But the only way that our faith will become broader is through exercise. When the trials of life seem to weigh you down, by faith, claim this promise, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it,” (1Corinthians 10:13) and PRESS ON!
